Book Notes - Ibong Adarna (stanzas 158-187)

Note: In the textbook I have, it ends in what would be the middle of stanza 188, where the Don Juan gets the blessing of the hermit before they leave (as he deemed it important). And since it's just half the stanza, I decided to just cut it at 187 instead. The latter half of 188 would also kind of give away what happens in the next scene, so yeah...

Summary

And so, Don Juan goes back up to the Piedras Platas' vicinity in order to wait for the bird. Just in time, too, cause the Adarna bird arrives shortly after.

Like before, the bird gets singing. But unlike the previous times, this prince gets his knife, cuts his hand, and puts the lime juice on it. It works (gotta hurt, though).

The narrator (thankfully) doesn't elaborate on the other six times this happens, but instead says that for every time the bird sings, Don Juan does the thing. Then once the Adarna bird finishes its songs, it goes to poop, which the prince avoids.

Having avoided certain death, Don Juan quickly goes up the tree. He sees that the bird has its wings extended and its eyes open (which is apparently how it sleeps) and gets close to it. The prince then grabs its feet and then ties it up with the golden rope.

Upon capturing the bird, Don Juan goes back to the hermit, and the man puts it inside a pretty-looking cage. The hermit then gives the prince a pot and tells him to fill it up with water and pour that water on the two rocks near the tree as soon as possible, as doing so would reveal his two brothers.

Don Juan does as he's told and saves both Don Pedro and Don Diego from actually dying. The two thank him and pretty much owe him for what he has done for them.

The three then go to the hermit's house, where they are given food to eat. Don Juan's wounds are also treated with a magical ointment that heals them and leaves no trace.

After the princes refresh themselves, they are told to go back to the kingdom with the bird as soon as possible, since if they take too long, they might not return with their father still alive. (Also he tells them that they should get along during the trip and not do anything sus.) But before they do leave, Don Juan kneels in front of the hermit (to ask for his blessing.)

Personal Thoughts

Before reading this, I knew that Don Juan would get the Adarna bird successfully, but I didn't really know that it was this eventful. Yep, I missed out on a lot not having read this before.

Like, I didn't know about the bird's unusual sleeping habits, as well as how exactly the two brothers get saved. Well, now i know.

Speaking of now I know... Now I think I get how Don Diego didn't recognize the rock as Don Pedro before... I think he really did turn into a crystalline rock, like, a rock, and not anything recognizable. Either that, or he really was just charmed by the tree lol

What else can I say...? I gotta say, Don Juan really is different from the other two in terms of personality, and in a good way. I'm guessing that's partly why he's the king's favorite.
