Book Notes - Ibong Adarna (stanzas 278-303)

Note: I am not sure if the Adarna bird is going to show up again from this point on lol but let's see...

Summary

The narrator goes back to Don Juan's side of things, where it's shown that the prince has gone to the mountains of Armenya/Armenia (not related to any real place of the same name), and the place is described as having interesting trees and beautiful grass. Then they go back to the brothers' side of things, and apparently they find Don Juan there.

Don Diego then suggests that they just live together there, since if they go back to their kingdom with Don Juan, someone's just going to get punished by their father, the king. And, well, that's what they did.

Then one time, they come upon a well, and Don Juan gets the urge to go down to the bottom of it, to see what's there. Conveniently, there's a rope on top of it, and Don Juan asks his brothers to tie it to him, with the intent of lowering him down the well.

But Don Diego says that he's older, so he should go first and see how deep it is. And then Don Pedro says that since he is the oldest, he should be the one investigating the well, and when he pulls on the rope, it's a signal that his brothers should pull him up.

And so the two tie the rope around Don Pedro and lower him down, to around 30 meters. However, he gets scared before he even reaches the bottom, and so he pulls on the rope and is pulled up. They ask him what he saw, and he says that he couldn't reach the bottom, and it was so dark that fear overtook him.

Don Diego then asks the other two to have the rope tied to him so he could find out what's at the end of the well. He doesn't fare any better, as he starts pulling on the rope around three meters in. Don Juan asks if he has reached the bottom, but Don Diego says that he couldn't see it as it was very dark and he got scared too.

Don Juan, seemingly unfazed by what his brothers have said, finally gets his turn to go down into the well. And the narrator goes on to say that as it says in history, a deep well goes for more than a hundred meters down.

As to what happens next? I figured I should leave it for the next part (yeah I kind of spoiled myself but not so much as to actually know everything that happens.)

Personal Thoughts

I'm actually surprised that the two older brothers didn't decide to mess with Don Juan this time around. But I'm still suspicious of what they could do while he's still down there...

And yeah, I'm really getting to the part that I don't have any idea on what's going to happen at all. That is, aside from the immediate thing that will happen. But as I said above, I'm going to put that in the next part.

As usual, I have a bit of a hard time figuring out what happened because of some words that I could barely look up. And apparently, back then they spelled numbers like tatlumpu (thirty) as two words instead of one.

So far, though, I really wanna know what happens in this story arc (the Armenya thing).
