Random Things I've Learned
This is where I dump random things I've noticed or learned or whatnot over the years just because I don't know where else to put them and I wanna just put it out there. So forgive me if it's all over the place, and it will certainly be.
Apps/Programs
- In Krita, if you named a layer something with a number, it will automatically follow that numbering when you put in a new layer (or at least if it's larger than the other numbers already on there? I dunno). For example I named a group layer "something something 2023", and I put a paint layer in that group and it became "Paint Layer 2024". It's funny.
Math
- I've found testing if numbers are divisible by 2, 3, 5, and 7 to be useful when testing if they're prime or not. Even numbers are automatically divisible by 2. For 3, you can add up the numbers in the number until you get just one number and then see if it's divisible by 3. Non-0 numbers that end in 0 and numbers that end in 5 are divisible by 5. 7... I'm not really sure if there's an easy way for that yet lol
- Because of the commutative property of multiplication (a x b = b x a), you only really need to memorize half of your times tables.
- An easy way to multiply numbers that end in a lot of zeroes, like hundreds and thousands, is to just add up all the zeroes that they have, then multiply the remaining numbers and putting the result before all the zeroes.
Plants
- Because of the game Karambola, I've become aware of this fruit called kiwano, or horned melon.
- Also apparently, immature spruce cones are edible...
Translation/Localization
- There was a time back then when, for some reason, certain English-speaking people translated onigiri (Japanese rice balls) as "jelly donuts", when obviously they're neither jelly-filled nor look anything like donuts.
- And speaking of mistranslations... In the Tagalog dub of Fruits Basket (like, the first anime of it), onigiri were translated as "pichi-pichi", which is a Filipino dessert made with cassava, not rice. To be fair, if it's rolled in dessicated coconut before serving, it could be kind of like it? But yeah, people weren't as aware of other cultures as they are now, hence the substitutions.
Video Games
- In the event "Roses and Muskets" in Genshin Impact, Ayaka actually makes her voice higher-pitched when she is in the role of Iris.
- Speaking of that event, apparently they put in this cool detail contrasting how Chevreuse handles muskets (finger out of the trigger, showing experience and responsible handling) and how Ayaka handles muskets (finger close to the trigger)
- The two unga bunga catalysts in Genshin Impact have pretty cool differences. Heizou can bring down bushes and shake trees, while Wriothesley can't and just shadow boxes them lol.
- Speaking of Wriothesley, he won't consume stamina nor regain HP charge attacking ores if he has "There Shall Be a Plea for Justice" unlocked and his HP is below 60 percent. Make of that what you will lol
- At this point, you can tell I'm a bit into Genshin right now... But I found that Anemo Traveler's skill by itself doesn't wreck bushes, but can do so if infused with Hydro or Cryo. Electro doesn't do anything, and Pyro obviously makes bushes burn first before they poof out. Also, it mines Iron Chunks...
- So, I already knew about using Select to use lowercase letters in Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, but I didn't know you can swap the order of moves around using the same button. Turns out you can only do it while you're in battle, and I only found that out while watching a speedrun and confirmed it by searching. Maaaan...
- I just found that if you start playing Holocure on Steam after you've been playing on the Itch version, the achievements and progress actually carry over.
- Apparently, Great Balls sometimes work better than Ultra Balls in Gen 1 games of Pokemon???
